We often ignore our bodies while studying for exams. It is indeed important to spend the maximum amount of time studying, but you should also understand that an unhealthy body will not permit your brain to function well. It is very important to have a healthy mind and body during exams. Here are few ways that you can stay healthy even during exams.
1. Eat well
It is the food we eat that fuels or bodies and gives us the strength to carry out strenuous tasks. Thus, it is important to eat nutritious food at regular intervals to stay healthy. Eat a balanced diet which includes fruits, vegetables, calcium, minerals and vitamins. Include foods such as spinach and almond that are good for memory. Carbohydrates form a great source of energy and should be eaten in the right proportions. If you are in the habit of studying late at night, make sure you keep eating snacks like nuts, granola bars and fruits while you are up. You can also eat a little bit of dark chocolate which has a soothing effect on the brain and alleviates stress.
2. Get adequate sleep
Nothing can relax your mind better than a good night’s sleep. Sleep can make your memory function better, as it helps to boost long-term memory. Avoid studying late in the night. And if you just can’t do without it, plan your sleeping pattern. For instance, study for a couple of hours and then sleep for the next three hours. Sleep deprived students often fall prey to anxiety and cannot perform well in exams. Plan your study schedule in such a manner that you get a minimum of eight hours of quality sleep each night.
3. Drink lots of water
Drinking water is very important for maintaining your body’s equilibrium. Dehydration prevents can exhaust you. Water not only keeps you mind and body healthy, but helps flush out toxins and keeps illness at bay. After all, you can’t afford to fall ill during exams! Try to consume a minimum of eight glasses of water every day.
4. Say no to caffeine and alcohol
Many students drink huge quantities of coffee to stay awake at night, but the caffeine present in coffee increases stress. Avoid caffeine, especially at night. Similarly, alcohol has a negative effect on the physical functioning of the body, and it makes you sleepy. So, it is best to celebrate only after your exams end!
5. Get regular exercise
It may not be possible to go to the gym when you are busy studying. However, you should take out half an hour a day to keep yourself fit. Moreover, it has been scientifically proven that exercise acts as a stress buster by releasing endorphins in the body. So, whenever you get sick of studying, take a small exercise break and rejuvenate your body and mind.
6. Take regular breaks
It is very important to make a study plan before your exams start. In this plan, include small breaks after every study session. For instance, take a break of ten minutes after studying for an hour. This break can be used to spend some time with your family, eat, watch television or just to chat with friends. These breaks rejuvenate the mind and prepare you mentally and physically for the next round of studying.
7. Keep in touch with loved ones
It is very important to stay in touch with your loved ones. Don’t ignore your friends during exams. Chatting with them can be a healthy change from your studies. Don’t isolate yourself as this will add to your anxiety. Remember that it is just an exam. Life still goes on no matter how well or badly you do. So chill out and enjoy life even while preparing for an exam.
